Starting a new relationship with a man can be an exciting and exhilarating experience. However, it’s important to approach it with caution and awareness.

Sometimes, people can put their best foot forward in the beginning, but as time goes on, their true colors start to show. This isn’t different for romantic relationships and that’s why it’s crucial to keep an eye out for red flags when dating someone new.

Learn about the red flags to watch out for when dating someone new. From lack of communication to controlling behavior, this blog post will help you identify warning signs and make informed decisions in your relationships. Don't let these red flags go unnoticed – read on now.

These warning signs can indicate potential issues and help you make informed decisions about your relationships.

In this blog post, we’ll discuss 10 common red flags to look out for when dating someone new.

Don’t ignore these signs – they could be the key to avoiding heartache and finding a healthy, fulfilling relationship.

Here are some common red flags to watch out for when dating someone new:

Lack of communication

This red flag can take many forms, including not responding to messages or calls, taking a long time to reply, or simply not initiating communication.

If the person you’re dating consistently shows a lack of interest in communicating with you, it could be a sign that they’re not as invested in the relationship as you are.

Inconsistent behavior

One of the more common red flags to look out for when dating someone new is inconsistent behavior. If he’s hot and cold, it can be difficult to determine where you stand in the relationship.

Inconsistent behavior may include:

  • canceling plans last minute
  • being affectionate one day and distant the next, or
  • expressing interest in the future together but then pulling back

This could indicate that they’re not ready for a serious relationship with you or have commitment issues. I just went through this with a man I was dating, trust me – it won’t get any better.

Controlling behavior

If the man you’re dating tries to control your actions, it’s a clear red flag. Run, girl!

This could include telling you what to wear, where to go, or who to spend your time with.

Controlling behavior can also be a sign of deeper issues, such as low self-esteem, insecurity, or a desire for power and control.

Anger issues

Are you dating a man that displays anger or aggression quickly or frequently? If so, it’s a major red flag you do not want to ignore. It’s a sign of underlying anger issues or emotional instability. It could also lead to abuse.

I had a man squeeze my hand so hard it hurt and I knew right then I had to get out of the situation pronto. He also threatened to put his hands on me, even in a joking manner I knew this wasn’t good.

His anger issues could be a result of unresolved past trauma, an inability to handle stress, or difficulty managing their emotions. Either way, you’re not their therapist or punching bag – get out.

Dishonesty

A man who lies about small things or keeps important information from you is a dishonest person. It’s a sign of a lack of trust and honesty in the relationship.

This could also indicate a deeper issue with trust or a lack of respect for your relationship. It’s a red flag to look out for when dating someone new, so cut it off with him immediately.

Disrespectful behavior

If the person you’re dating is disrespectful to you or others, it’s a sign of underlying issues with anger or self-esteem.

Disrespectful behavior can take many forms, including name-calling, belittling, or being dismissive of your opinions. Either way, it’s a form of abuse and it will only get worse if you continue a relationship with him.

Addiction or substance abuse

I’ve discussed this before, but if the man you’re dating has a substance abuse problem, it can put a strain on the relationship and potentially lead to other issues.

Substance abuse can be a sign of deeper emotional or psychological issues that need to be addressed. Don’t take on his problems, lead him towards a professional and get out of dodge.

Disinterest in your life

If a man doesn’t show an interest in your life, this is a red flag that they’re not invested in the relationship.

This could manifest as a lack of interest in your hobbies, friends, or career, and may indicate that they’re not looking for a serious, committed relationship with you. Move on.

5 Ways to Know He’s Interested in You

Unresolved issues with ex-partners

If the person you’re dating has unresolved issues with their ex-partners, it can cause tension in the relationship and potentially lead to emotional baggage.

This could include talking about their ex-partners frequently, being overly concerned with their ex-partners’ lives, or being unable to move on from past relationships. A guy I dated called his ex-wife his best friend and bought her expensive gifts for her birthday and Christmas.

He’s never going to commit to you because he’s still pining for his ex. On to the next.

Lack of effort

If the person you’re dating consistently fails to put effort into the relationship, it’s a sign that they may not be interested in a serious relationship.

This could include canceling plans last minute, failing to follow through on commitments, or not making time for you. I finally cut off contact with a man, because he flaked out on me too much. I’m worth the effort – and so are you.

These are 10 red flags to look out for when dating someone new, but there are plenty more. If you feel uncomfortable or uneasy about the relationship, it’s important to communicate your concerns and potentially end the relationship if necessary.

Remember, it’s better to be single than to be in a relationship that doesn’t make you happy or fulfilled.
