How to Mix Social Media and Your Relationship

Shay · December 17, 2014 · Leave a Comment

In the world of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, everyone’s business is anybody’s business.  Using social media to update your friends and family on a recent trip or hot new dress you bought is great, but it’s not okay to discuss the happenings of your boo with them.  Unless you’re Chris Brown and Karruche Tran, it’s probably best to leave your relationship off of social media and behind closed doors.  Otherwise, don’t mix social media and your relationship.

Social media and your relationship. Can you really mix the two? Here are a few tips on how to do so and save your relationship.

Here are my five tips on how to keep the relationship between you and your man sacred and not under scrutiny in front of the internet.

1.  Do not stalk your man.

Do not like all his status updates.  Do not look through his photo gallery to look for old girlfriends (and current indiscretions) and definitely do not stalk his exes.  There’s no need to compare yourself with women who have long passed their expiration date.  Doing so will only make you go crazy.

2.  Do not air your dirty laundry for everyone to see.

If you’re mad at your man, let him know.  Don’t post he’s a lying douche on his Facebook page.  Not only is it tacky, but it show’s a weird level of insecurity.  The only thing you will accomplish is looking like the bad one in the situation, no matter who’s actually at fault.  Not only can his boss venture on his page to see what drama has unfolded, but so could yours.  Leave all that social media messiness for someone else.

3.  Spare your friends.

No one cares about what goes on in your relationship.  Some may talk for a bit because it’s juicy gossip, but after the steaminess goes down, they’re going to become irritated with you flooding their news feed with foolishness.  Don’t embarrass yourself.

4.  Remember that no one forgets.

Long after you and your love bucket have made up, the Twitter posts will long live in the atmosphere.  You might make up and forget, but the actions during a volatile situation will be hard for anyone else to.  Just don’t post anything personal.  Doing so can damage your reputation for a long time to come.

5.  Keep a cool head and grow up.

You might be mad now, but would you react the same way once you’ve calmed down?  If your answer is no, put the phone down and stay off of social media for awhile and walk away with your pride intact.
